ABOUT BARBARA HEIDENREICH:

Barbara Heidenreich has always known animals were her calling. After receiving her degree in zoology and trying many different types of animal-related jobs, she discovered the world of animal training… and what a wonderful discovery it was! Finally, a career where she could get paid to play with animals! In 1990 Barbara began training birds and staff in zoos around the country for free flight educational programs. This eventually evolved into consulting on animal training around the world. She joined the board of directors for the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators in 1997 and was honored to be the first female president of the organization. But what she gained from this career was far more than pleasurable work and experiences. She learned how the science of behavior works, how positive reinforcement training allows one to forge an amazing bond with an animal, and how many people are seeking information to help them do the same.

The companion parrot community is one that is near and dear to Barbara’s heart. She herself has had a companion parrot, a Blue Fronted Amazon named Tarah, since 1987. Over the years of presenting free-flight bird shows, Barbara often received questions pertaining to companion parrots in the home. These questions lead Barbara to write her first book, “Good Bird! A Guide to Solving Behavioral Problems in Companion Parrots.” Seeing the need for good information on positive reinforcement training in the companion parrot community, Barbara began teaching workshops on parrot behavior and training, providing consulting services and speaking to parrot interest groups. Encouraged by the enthusiasm and excitement she saw for positive reinforcement training she decided to launch Good Bird® Inc.
